Camp Durant
Description -- The summer of 2000 will mark the 21st anniversary of Camp Durant, located on the Occoneechee Scout Reservation in Moore County, N.C., near Carthage, N.C. The camp operates a full advancement program, with instruction in nearly 50 merit badges in aquatics, field sports, shooting sports, first aid, handicrafts, ecology/conservation, Scoutcraft and citizenship. The "Trailblazer" program emphasizes the needs of first-year campers by providing instruction in basic skills leading to accomplishment of the requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class ranks. One week of the summer is reserved for a C.O.P.E. High Adventure Outpost Trek for Scouts First Class and above. the six-day outpost trek includes a wide variety of outdoor skills, including climbing, rappelling, wilderness survival, construction of a pressure-bar raft, construction of a water still, edible plants and purification of water and using natural surroundings to find direction. Participants may also earn the 50-Miler Award, the Paul Bunyan Woodsman Award and several merits badges, including Astronomy, Backpacking, Camping, Canoeing, Cooking, Cycling, Fishing, Hiking, Orienteering, Pioneering and Wilderness Survival.

Camp Reeves
Description -- Camp Reeves is a primitive camp with partial facilities that include a waterfront, chapel, Jamboree-type camping fields (with electricity), administration building, commissary and health lodge. Camp Reeves is located adjacent to Camp Durant on the Occoneechee Scout Reservation near Carthage, North Carolina.

Camp W. D. Campbell
Description -- Camp W. D. Campbell, on Kerr Lake, is located near Townsville, North Carolina, but is actually situated across the Virginia state line. The property consists of 459 acres of rolling wooded terrain and is leased from the Federal Government through the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. Approximately 90% of this land is in pine and hardwood trees. There is a commissary/storage building on the property and water is available. Contact the Council Office for further information and reservations for camping.
Camp John J. Barnhardt
Description -- Camp Barnhardt is located on 1,000 acres of rolling, wooded hills on Badin Lake in the William C. Cannon Scout Reservation between Albemarle and Salisbury, N.C. The camp features 14 well spaced troop sites around an Olympic-sized, L-shaped swimming pool, two man-made lakes, a new dining hall, a chapel, a commissary, a health lodge, an ecology lodge, a rifle range, a shotgun range and an archery range, an outpost camp, a picnic area, a C.O.P.E. course and a rappelling tower. Montgomery Campfire Circle, a replica of a Seminole Indian enclosure designed after the nearby Town Creek Indian Mounds State Park, is the site of many good campfire programs and ceremonies. The Lone Scouts, which is a division of the Boy Scouts of America that made it possible for "any boy anywhere to become a Scout" selected Camp Barnhardt as the home of its National Museum and Memory Lodge.

Camp Bonner
Description -- Bonner Scout Reservation is located on 600 acres along the Pamlico River near Aurora, N.C. In 1995, the camp introduced open-scheduling, which allows campers to customize their personal schedules by deciding for themselves when and how long they will spend on earning merit badges. There is a first-year camper program for younger Scouts and special activities for older Scouts, including training on a C.O.P.E. course. One week of the summer schedule is designated as "Specialty Camp" and experienced Scouts can choose from four high-adventure activities, including an entire week of canoeing on the Tar and Pamlico Rivers, horsemanship training, an acquatics camp and "Project Eagle" for Scouts who are preparing to earn their Eagle rank.
Pamlico Sea Base
Description -- Pamlico Sea Base, through its Coastal Adventures program, gives older Scouts the opportunity to participate in advanced outdoor and high adventure expeditions. Located within the Bonner Scout Reservation on the picturesque banks of the Pamlico River in Beaufort County, North Carolina, the seabase is a nationally accredited high adventure base, as rich in history as it is in exciting outdoor opportunities. Six programs are offered, each designed to suit the varied interests of older Boy Scouts, Venturers and Sea Scouts. The programs include "Sailing University," "Venture Camp," "Woods and Waters," "Canoeing Expedition," "Sailing Expedition," and "Sea Kayaking Trek."
Camp Tuscarora
Description -- Camp Tuscarora is located on a wooded reservation approximately 30 minutes drive from Goldsboro, N.C., adjacent to Bentonville Historic Battlefield. Much of the camp was renovated in 1994 and the camp trading post was remodeled and enlarged this year to include an area with tables and chairs where Scouts can sit to read their merit badge pamphlets and sip a slushy in air-conditioned comfort. The Pathfinder program, designed for first-year Scouts, offers training in fundamental Scouting skills. A full aquatics program is conducted on Lake Sylvania, the camp's private, 20-acre lake, and nearly 40 merit badges in the areas of field sports, Scoutcraft, ecology/conservation, health, life sciences and campcraft are offered during the day. In the evenings, there are campfires, waterfront games, a beach party, scavenger hunt and sports challenges.

Camp Daniel Boone
Description -- Located 12 miles south of Canton in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina about 40 miles southwest of Asheville. Adjacent to the Shining Rock National Wilderness Area, Camp Daniel Boone has miles and miles of trails through Pisgah National Forest. Located at an altitude of 3,400 feet, Daniel Boone is nestled between two 4,000-foot mountain ranges. Campsites are naturally spaced and connected by winding trails, crossing cool, clear streams. Troop sites sleep from 12 to 28 campers. Natural camping is provided under wall tents mounted on raised platforms or wooden Adirondacks. Hot showers are spaced throughout the campsites. Campers enjoy the challenge of field sports at Daniel Boone, including riflery, archery, skeet, athletics and excellent fishing. The camp's waterfront on Lake Allen is a large, typical mountain lake -- crystal clear and cool. Canoeing, lifesaving, swimming, snorkeling and rowing are taught on the waterfront by trained, certified staff. A handicraft lodge, ecology lodge and a variety of high adventure programs provide campers with many memorable experiences.

Camp Grimes
Description -- Camp Grimes is located on the 1,000-acre Mecklenburg Scout Reservation, 30 miles north of Shelby, N.C., and 10 miles south of Marion, N.C., in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The camp program includes instruction in 40 merit badges and high-adventure opportunities in mountain biking, sailing, rapelling, waterskiing, canoeing, and horseback riding. For older Scouts there is an extensive C.O.P.E. course, including a 40-foot rappelling tower with a zip line at the top. An 1800s Log Cabin program area demonstrates pioneer skills such as farming, panning for gold, blacksmithing, black-powder rifle-shooting and tomahawk throwing. A popular equestrian program includes trail rides. Aquatic activities are offered on a scenic mountain lake, surrounded by forested peaks. Meals are served in a large, modern, cafeteria-style dining hall with an covered outdoor pavilion.
Camp Bud Schiele
Description -- Located in the foothills of Western North Carolina near Rutherfordton, N.C. Camp Bud Schiele serves 2,000 Scouts each summer. Centered around a beautiful 31-acre lake, it offers a full program of swimming, boating, target shooting, handicraft and high adventure, under the guidance of a well-trained staff. Activities include a first-year camper program, a C.O.P.E. program for older Scouts, Challenge Valley (an obstacle course), instruction on a rappelling tower, new camp-wide events, a traditional troop canoe race, a Thursday night Indian Pageant and a popcorn-and-movie night. In addition, there is a complete merit badge program, offering instruction in aquatics, Scoutcraft, handicrafts, nature and field sports.

Camp Cherokee
Description -- Camp Cherokee is a 1,400-acre wilderness reservation in central North Carolina near Yanceyville, N.C. There are 12 troop sites, each convenient to camp facilities, including shower houses, health lodge, dining hall, picnic shelter, commissary, O.A. Lodge, chapel, handicraft shelter, training shelter, archery and rifle range, shotgun range and a lake. Instruction is offered in merit badges on a variety of outdoor subjects, as well as specialty certification in BSA Snorkeling, Mile Swim, Paul Bunyan, Tot'n Chip and Scout Lifeguard. A limited number of Scouts 13-years-old or older can participate in a full-time C.O.P.E. (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience) program. The Cherokee Rangers wilderness survival program is a weekly outdoor course that builds teamwork, self-confidence and Scouting skills through a wilderness survival program with a potential to earn 12 combined Scoutcraft and nature merit badges. the Woodsman program for first-year campers offers younger Scouts an opportunity to work on advancement requirements from Tenderfoot to First Class ranks organized around the patrol method.

Camp Bowers
Description -- Camp Bowers, a 700-acre campground located in Bladen County, near White Oaks, N.C., has been providing Boy Scouts with a great outdoor experience for more than 10 years. Campers have enjoyed exciting and challenging activities, a wonderful environment full of unique wildlife and vegetation and some of the country's most modern camping facilities, featuring a fully equipped bath house, a 200-seat dining hall, air-conditioned office and leaders center. Nine troop campsites surround lovely Lake Katherine, 45 acres of water for canoeing, rowing, sailing, swimming and fishing. Camp Bowers' high adventure program is in its fourth year of development and last year included a combination canoe trip and backpacking expedition. Eagle Week is offered during the fourth week of camp to help Scouts earn merit badges which will help them along the trail to Eagle rank. Camp Bowers was one of five camps chosen in 1983 to have the first C.O.P.E. courses in the nation. Project C.O.P.E. is a challenging and thrilling high course and low course designed to build self-confidence, trust and teamwork.

Raven Knob Scout Reservation
Description -- Raven Knob Scout Reservation, the camping facility of Old Hickory Council, is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in northwestern Surry County, near Mount Airy, N.C. It features 3,200 acres of unspoiled mountain woodlands surrounding picturesque Lake Sobotta. Old Hickory Council operates a six-week nationally accredited summer program in a lovely outdoor setting. The camp observed its 40th anniversary in 1995 and a special patch was issued to commemorate the milestone. New Scouts at Raven Knob can learn basic outdoor skills by enrolling in the Raven Scout program, which concentrates on the requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class. For older Scouts, there is the Outback high adventure program, which includes mountain biking, rock climbing and "Challie's Wilderness Review," combining backpacking, canoeing on the New River and off-road four-wheeling to parts of the camp that few get to see.

Camp Lions
Description -- Located on Pipsico Scout Reservation, more than 900 acres situated on a bluff overlooking the James River in Surry County, Virginia. Opened in 1988 as a long-term summer camp. New facilities, all built in accordance with national BSA standards, include a modern dining hall building capable of seating 300 persons, a 25-meter swimming pool with handicapped access ramp and attached shower/latrine facilities, a program/administration building, a fully equipped health lodge, a trading post, two activity shelters, a staff lounge, three two-bedroom cottages for senior staff, a rifle range and a central shower to serve the 12 troop campsites, each having its own latrine. Camp Chickahominy
Description -- Camp Chickahominy, located in Lightfoot, Virginia, is intentionally over-programmed, allowing Scouts the opportunity to choose activities that interest them. Troop leaders should be sensitive to the capacity of the individual and assure that the program he pursues is appropriate to rank.
Camp T. Brady Saunders
Description -- Camp T. Brady Saunders is located in Maidens, Goochland County, Virginia, and is owned and operated by Robert E. Lee Council. It is one of the finest Scout camping facilities in the South. Its 660 acres provide an exciting location for Scouting in the heart of Virginia. Scouts and leaders sleep in floored wall tents on cots and mattresses, eat in a central dining hall, where meals are served in the traditional Scout family style. Fifteen individual troop sites, divided into patrol sites, are used as a base of operation for each troop. Two 35-acre lakes for boating, swimming and fishing, handicarft lodge, nature lodge, field sports area with rifle and shotgun and archery ranges, Scout craft area with camping, cooking and pioneering are provided to support troop programs. A medical center, a leaders' lounge, and an administration center help support troop leadership. The "Camp Savvy" program is designed to give new Scouts a comfortable feeling about camp and introduce him to basic woodcraft skills.

Camp Boisseau
Description -- Described by some as "a stunning piece of property," the Camp Boisseau is the focus of a major camp development project recently undertaken by the Robert E. Lee Council. It's located on 220 acres next to Camp T. Brady Saunders.
Camp Douglas Fleet
Description -- Camp Douglas Fleet is a new camp being developed by Robert E. Lee Council.
High Knoll Trail
Description -- High Knoll Trail is the finest backpacking program east of Philmont! It's a week of backpacking excitement for Scouts who are either 12½ years old by June 1 or a First Class Scout. It is recommended that a Scout have two previous years of summer camp experience. Crews of Scouts and Explorers and their leaders spend a week backpacking the 16,000 beautiful acres of the Blue Ridge Scout Reservation. During the five days of hiking, the crew will cover between 35 and 50 miles of rugged, primitive trails. Each afternoon will be spent in an isolated program outpost doing: horseback riding, rock climbing and rappelling, black powder riflery, mountain biking, logging skills or advanced wilderness living skills. Crews can also elect to do either whitewater rafting or canoeing for an additional fee.

Camp Ottari
Description -- Camp Ottari is located on rugged, mountainous terrain on the Blue Ridge Scout Reservation near Hiwassee, Virginia. The camp accommodates about 200 Scouts and leaders in 10 campsites. The view from the dining hall overlooking the lake is exceptional. Ottari is not suited for those with severe handicapping conditions, but fans of the camp love its rugged beauty and less crowded atmosphere. Ottari was built in the late 1960s. Ottari offers the same programs as Camp Powhatan on the other side of the reservation, except that the larger lake allows an excellent sailing program and is full of bass and bluegill. A new shower and amphitheater were constructed last winter.

Camp Powhatan
Description -- Camp Powhatan is the largest camp on Blue Ridge Scout Reservation near Hiwassee, Virginia. It can handle more than 350 Scouts and leaders in 14 campsites. It's in a valley surrounded by mountains. Powhatan was built in the 1950s and has been extensively remodeled in the last five years. It has a new, 400-seat dining hall, a 900-seat ampitheater, and many new shower sites. Powhatan offers the traditional Boy Scout resident camp programs with merit badges and with a "First Class Adventure" program designed for young campers. It has campsites and showers that will accommodate handicapped Scouts. The lake is stocked with trout. Scouts can elect to do whitewater rafting and canoeing, mountain biking and climbing and rappelling on the camp's tower.

Camp Shenandoah
Description -- Stonewall Jackson Area Council established Camp Shenandoah in the summer of 1950 on 300 wooded acres on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Staunton. The camp is located 1,200 feet above sea level near Little North Mountain, where early pioneers crossed the mountains west towards the frontier. The camp is equipped with jamboree-style tents with wooden platforms on 12 secluded troop sites above 11-acre Memorial Lake. Last year, Camp Shenandoah re-opened its redesigned C.O.P.E. course, offering Scouts 13 or older an opportunity to increase self-confidence through a series of games and tasks that will challenge them physically, mentally and personally. A new rappelling tower was built this year in a remote area of the camp. A high adventure program combines a one-day C.O.P.E. instruction with whitewater rafting, caving, skeet shooting, rappelling, canoeing on the James River and frontier skills, such as black-powder rifle shooting. A first-year camper program offers new Scouts instruction in basic skills, such as camping, cooking, hiking, first aid and swimming. Meals are planned by a certified dietician and served family style in a spacious dining hall.

Camp Rock Enon
Description -- Camp Rock Enon is composed of 860 acres located long the great North Mountain at the top of the Shenandoah Valley in Gore, Virginia, near Winchester. There are 14 troop campsites equipped with two-man tents with platforms and a few Adirondacks -- for a maximum capacity of 250 Scouts and Scouters. The camp's program includes aquatics, field sports and ecology. The Frontier Program is specifically designed for the first-year camper. For Scouts 14 years old and older, the Zeb Garrabrandt Program features rappelling, vertical rock climbing and black powder rifle shooting. During the sixth week of the camp season, Camp Rock Enon offers "The Trail To Eagle," an unusual program designed to help those Scouts who are on the trail to Eagle by offering them instruction in additional Eagle-required merit badges.

Camp Bob Hardin
Description -- Camp Bob Hardin is located in the mountains of western North Carolina near the historic town of Saluda. The camp is owned and operated by Palmetto Council BSA, which has its headquarters in Spartanburg, S.C. The camp is approximately 250 acres of mountainous terrain with two lakes on the property. Half of the campsites are Adirondacks and half are tent sites. Program features include COPE, horsemanship, a 50-mile trek, whitewater rafting, tubing, Upward Bound (a new Scout program) and 34 separate merit badge offerings.
Hammerstone Scout Museum
Description -- Hammerstone Scout Museum is located 10 miles from Raven Rock State Park. Take Highway 27 West from Lillington for nine miles. Turn right on Leaflet Church Road. The Museum is two miles on the right. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. Call in advance to reserve a campsite or to tour the museum.
